Tom and Nikki’s wedding was a fun family day at Wandsworth Register Office. Unusually, I hadn’t met Tom and Nikki before the wedding day, as they hadn’t had an engagement photo session. So I quickly established a connection with them both and the emotional photos from their ceremony show how comfortable they were being photographed by me.
Usually the journey from wedding venue to reception is not a special part of the day, but Tom and Nikki had hired a vintage London Routemaster bus to transport their guests. So I arranged for me and my assistant to be on the bus to capture the journey as the sun set over the streets of London. It meant carrying around a lot of equipment all day, but the images make it all worthwhile.
Tom and Nikki really wanted photos taken outside Tooting Broadway underground station, so we braved the crowds on Tooting High Street to capture some fantastic colourful images. With the locals milling around us in the dusk, it was a mixture of wedding and street photography. I think the images are real snapshots of a moment that could never be artificially constructed.
The reception at the Antelope pub in Tooting was intimate and included a German log ceremony. Photographing something chaotic like that in a relatively small space can be a challenge, but you will often find me climbing on chairs or windowsills as getting up high gives a unique perspective.
