Ruby on Rails Community Resources

I’ve been learning Ruby on Rails over the last few weeks, but I’m new to Ruby, MVC and Rails so things are a bit hard going. Can anyone recommend (i.e. not just Google – I’ve done that myself) newbie-friendly Rails communities that I can get involved in, learn from and of which I can ask stupid questions? I’m thinking IRC channels, fora, real-life meetings etc. A group in the UK would be ideal, but I’ve not found anything yet and enquiries on my LUG list have so far not drawn any responses. If no such thing exists, is there any interest in starting a UK RoR community?

If you are new to ruby, I highly recommend picking up a copy of ‘Ruby for Rails’ by David Black. It will not only teach you the Ruby language (which is essential to working with Rails), but also provides some good info on how Rails utilizes features of Ruby.

Thanks for the recommendation, Bob. I’ve already got the Agile Web Development with Rails book and I’ve ordered O’Reilly’s new one on Learning Ruby too.

But there’s only so much you can learn from a book. I’ve picked up so much from my LUG by talking to people, hearing what other people are working on and having experts available to ask sticky questions of.

    3. It’s pretty hard to find any Ruby User Groups in the UK. The only really active one seems to be LRUG (London). I’ve tried to start one down here in Bournemouth, but there are only a few of us, we’ve had no meetup and the mailing list is dead :s

You can sign up on RailsWM ( which Elliot Smith (RoR guy from last LRL) setup. It doesn’t seem to be very active though.

I’ll be coming to LRL this year, maybe we can meetup, maybe try and organise something? I’ve been using Rails professionally for about 2 years now so I’d like to think I’m capable of answering some sticky questions 🙂

Hi Andrew. Thanks for pointing out those three groups! It would be great to chat about stuff at LRL. I think promoting an existing group is probably a better idea than starting another under-active group! What do you think?

I’ve found or been pointed in the direction of the Ruby groups listed here, so far: HantsLUG Archive
